Sunday Postcard Art - Owls!



The Morepork (Ruru), New Zealand's native owl, has large staring eyes and a mournful cry, echoed by its name. Ruru provide a rich source of symbolism for Maori. Their haunting cry and watchful nature are linked with tapu (spiritual restriction), guardianship, forewarning, grief and awareness.

    I wonder if your morepork is related to our mopoke? It too has a mournful call which sounds very much like mopoke. I think your owl is hungry and is calling for more pork.
    Your take on the theme is fantastic, Judy. The use of the reflection in the eye is so unique and clever. I love it.
